At Little Sunshine Childcare Center, we often have parents ask us how to prepare their child for their first trip to daycare. We understand that new experiences can sometimes be difficult on children, which is why we’ve put together this list of tips to help prepare your child for a happy and successful first day at daycare. Read on to learn more, and when you’re ready to sign your child up for daycare, reach out to our Clarksdale childcare center for a tour.
Talk About What to Expect
When your child starts daycare, they will be exposed to a whole new environment with new people, new rules, and new expectations. It can be a lot for a child to take in, which is why it’s important to talk to your child about what to expect before their first day. Explain to them who their teacher will be, what the other kids will be like, and what they’ll be doing during the day.
One of the best things you can do to prepare your child for daycare is to encourage their independence. Daycare is a great place for children to learn how to be independent and take care of themselves. Start by teaching them simple things like how to put on their own shoes and coat, and then move on to things like using the restroom and washing their hands. The more independent your child is, the easier they’ll find it to adjust to daycare.
Adjust Your Child’s Schedule & Routine
If your child is used to being home all day, they may have a hard time adjusting to a new schedule. To help them adjust, start by slowly changing their schedule a few weeks before they start daycare. Get them up a little earlier in the morning, and have them take naps at the same time they would at daycare. You can also start having them eat their meals a little earlier so they’re used to the daycare schedule.
Meet the Teacher
One of the best ways to prepare your child for daycare is to introduce them to their teacher before their first day. If possible, schedule a time to meet with the teacher and tour the daycare center. This will help your child feel more comfortable on their first day, and it will give you a chance to ask any questions you have about the daycare.
